Knit envy

The other day Trish dropped by with her regulation bag of knitting (she doesn't always carry a purse, but the bag of knitting is a given, which is yet another reason we love Trish) and when she finally opened it - WOW.  Just... well, Toffee says it better than I can.

You know how when you look at somebody else's knitting and it makes you happy, you can guess what fiber or yarn it is, you recognize the pattern or the type of pattern, etc. etc.?  I mean, it's more than Polite Interest always.  But that tidal wave of

MUST. HAVE.

...is more rare.  which I guess is lucky because we would be sneaking things out of each others' knitting bags all the time if it weren't.

Time to get up, Toffee, we need to look at this knit.  (sorry, sweetie.)

Anyhoo, Trish is knitting a perfectly ordinary scarf here which I keep remembering as 'truth telling' but is actually called All The Shades of Truth, and owes its deliciousness to the genius of Laura Aylor. 

There are a few things that are particularly special about this knit.  One is, obviously, that it has distracted me (and Toffee!) from socks.

Another is that Trish is knitting it out of cashmere she reclaimed from thrift store sweaters.  Held double, I think, Trish?  It's taking forever on tiny needles, I know that much.  The fact that she's knitting it to give to somebody else: not remarkable.  Trish is always doing stuff like that.

I can not compute.

You know, I often avoid colourblocky stuff because I hate the whole folding yarns over on themselves at the join thing, but this scarf/shawl/fest is created by picking up stitches at the side of the work, which I do for every sock heel and have come to enjoy quite a lot.  So what's holding me back?  Other than, you know, socks to knit and only so many hours in the day.  It's not like I don't have a whack ton of yarn to use up.

(I think I would have to have a whack ton of solid coloured yarn in one weight, though.  That part might be tough.)

Trish even used this project as an exercise in Continental Knitting vs. Throw That Yarn, under cover of a particularly dramatic colour change.

I would not do that, mainly because I already know that Continental knitting makes my carpal tunnel issues worse.  Le sigh.


It must be said that I have not cast on a Truth item since seeing Trish's.  I am being responsible instead, arranging for important things like a giant hole to be dug in the basement.  But it's likely that once I have a giant hole in my basement I will need one, don't you think?
